The United Nations Chinese Language Day has played an important role in promoting communication and cultural exchanges between nations and peoples around the world, said Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization Zurab Pololikashvili on Wednesday.
Speaking via video link at the 2022 United Nations Chinese Language Day and Second China Media Group (CMG) Overseas Chinese Language Video Festival held in Geneva, the UN official made the remarks while extending congratulations on the success of the event.
"I'm sending my best wishes on this special day. Today, the need for dialog between nations and between peoples is more important than ever. Chinese Language Day plays an important role in promoting just this. It celebrates its a rich, diverse culture, and it's recognized the need for the Chinese language to be part of our global conversation, to be an official language of the United Nations, and since 2021, of the World Tourism Organization as well. This way, we will help tourists from all parts of the world learn more about Chinese culture and history. At the same time, it will allow China to have a great say in the work of our organization and the future of our sector," he said.
The Chinese language is one of the six languages of the United Nations. The other five are Arabic, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
Since 2010, the United Nations has marked Chinese Language Day on April 20 over the language's contribution to the world while encouraging more people to learn it. MSTelevision reporter by Charlie Zhong
